Who We Are

We are operators, not investors.

We are two close friends — with young families, mortgages, and skin in the game — looking for one great business to step into and run for the long term. We are not a private equity firm. There is no fund, no exit timeline, no strategy deck. Just two people who want to find something worth pouring themselves into.

We have spent our careers learning how good businesses actually work — what keeps them healthy, what puts them at risk, and what it takes to lead people well. We bring that knowledge with us. But we come in with humility, knowing that what you have built took decades to earn.

When we talk to an owner, we are not thinking about what we can take. We are thinking about what we can protect — the reputation, the team, the relationships.

Matt grew up the youngest of five in a small town in southern Virginia, the kind of place where the start of hunting season was bigger than Christmas and the people who ran the local businesses were the ones who held the community together. His father flew helicopters for the Air Force for 23 years before retiring to the classroom alongside his mother. From both of them, he learned that fulfillment comes from showing up every day for the people who need you and investing in them heavily.

Before stepping into business, Matt spent two years doing volunteer service in southern Spain, coordinating teams of people from wildly different backgrounds and learning what it actually takes to lead. He came away with a conviction that the strength of any organization comes down to the quality of the relationships inside it.

He went on to spend his career learning how businesses actually work, first as a management consultant and then as an investor. What drives him most today is the chance to build something meaningful that will outlast him. At home, Matt is constantly trying to keep up with his three young boys, who keep him on his toes and force him to stay in shape. He loves taking them to far-off places to teach them about the world and playing sports together.

Hans is the youngest of four boys, raised in the Rocky Mountain West where hard work was expected and respect was earned. That upbringing shapes how he sees business — with genuine curiosity about what makes an organization last and deep respect for the people who built it.

Before co-founding Upland Legacy Partners, Hans built his career in consulting (Boston Consulting Group) and investing (Bain Capital), learning what separates good businesses from great ones and what it takes to help them reach their full potential. He brings a steady hand, a sharp eye for what matters, and a belief that the most enduring companies are built on culture, integrity, and treating people with genuine respect.

When he is not working, you will find him recreating in the great outdoors, making memories with his wife and son.
